If you are on vacation in Florence you might consider a day trip to Cinque Terre which is possible to do if you start early and come back late.. It takes approx 2.5 – 3 hours to get to Cinque Terre from Florence by train and you will enter this beautiful region along the Ligurian coastline… The Cinque Terre consists of five tiny villages called, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The Cinque Terre villages are just one stop apart by train (a few minutes between each village) which makes seeing them all in just one day very possible with a little planning.

If you are driving to Cinque Terre from Florence it will take approx 2.5 hours if you are lucky enough not to get any delays, however it can take a lot longer if there is traffic en route…. Once you get to La Spezia it is probably best to leave the car in the car park at the station and get the train to Cinque Terre, as driving to the villages takes longer and the roads can be narrow and windy.. If you decide to drive into the villages car parking is also expensive with limited spaces. Monterosso has 2 large car parks at each end of the village and is probably the easiest to park in. Most parking outside of the car parks is reserved for residents and during the summer months it is also prohibited to drive through the villages.

The train however goes through tunnels and gets to the villages very quickly compared to car travel, approx 10 mins to Riomaggiore and then each stop between the villages is just a few minutes.. Arriving at Corniglia by train can be a little more tricky as the village is up high, you would either need to take the community bus or walk up the 382 steps.

So if you are travelling from Florence to Cinque Terre it is always best to plan in advance in order to make the most of your time. Information for trains to Cinque Terre can be found here www.trenitalia.com.. Remember that in the high season the villages can be very busy and if stormy weather is forecast the roads can be quite difficult.. Our advice if you do want to get from Florence to Cinque Terre is to go by train.

Although a day trip can be wonderful, staying for a few days in Cinque Terre would enable you to see the area properly and enjoy these enchanting villages.. There is so much to do and see and a visit to The Cinque Terre Cooking School is an amazing culteral and fun learning experience.. Lessons are held everyday at 10am and at 6pm, details can be found on our website.

Raining in Cinque Terre

When on your holiday it can be difficult to find Things to do in Cinque Terre when it rains. The beautiful region of Cinque Terre in Liguria is predominately an outdoor area when it comes to activities, so it can be disappointing when it’s raining and you only have a few days holiday there. The usual activities that spring to mind are sightseeing and hiking in Cinque Terre, but these are not possible if it is pouring with rain. Fortunately here at the Cinque Terre Cooking School we don’t just cook outside, we also have a huge indoor area which is warm and welcoming. Cooking lessons are held every day up until 15th of December and it is a great educational and fun activity for families, friends, couples and singles. We can also accommodate large groups and private lessons. Cooking Lessons in Cinque Terre can be a great choice when it is raining as it is still a great way to learn about the regions cuisine and culture. Our lessons are totally authentic and available to book now.

Cinque Terre Raining

There are some other things to do when it is raining in Cinque Terre and nearby. You could take the train to La Spezia and go shopping! In La Spezia there is a large indoor shopping centre called Le Terrazze. It has many shops and also a few nice bars and restaurants. You could also visit Museo Civico Amedeo LiaThis museum is located in a beautiful convent and has a fabulous collection of artworks, glassworks, bronzes and much more, a fantastic collection which was donated by Amedeo Lia who died recently. This collection of magnificent pieces dates back to 1620. There are also many other museums in La Spezia and a day out visiting these can be a great pastime on a rainy day in Cinque Terre. When purchasing a ticket for the museums it is possible to buy a day pass for 12 euros which will allow entry to into all of them.

Rainy day in Cinque Terre

Another activity for a rainy day in Cinque Terre is Wine tasting. The Cinque Terre Wine School in Monterosso holds lessons everyday and is open up until the 5th of November. They offer a comprehensive selection of red and white regional wines and teach how to food pair. A light lunch is served which is freshly prepared by their talented chefs. If you like seafood then this is a must. For more information visit the Wine School in Cinque Terre.

Cinque Terre in the Rain

When it is raining in Cinque Terre many people decide to take the train to some of the bigger cities such as Pisa or Genoa. There are intercity trains that arrive in about an hour. Another good idea is to check the weather as sometimes although rain is scheduled for Cinque Terre you may find that it is not as bad if you take the train to another city. Alternatively if you are unsure about what to do in Cinque Terre in the rain then you may decide to just buy a large umbrella and stay put. Go for a walk on the beach and have a delicious lunch in one if the restaurants near the sea under a canopy. A few glasses of wine and the rain never seems as bad
